ITS2018 1

The Dutch Cycling Embassy was present at the ITS 2018 in Copenhagen. Jointly with the Cycling Embassy of Denmark, we participated to the session “Connected, cooperative and sustainable – How cities can accelerate cycling through intelligent mobility solutions.”

During this session the following topics were discussed:

• Autonomous vehicles’ impact on cycling
• Cycling and MaaS (Mobility as a Service)
• Potential and issues related to dockless bike sharing and e-bikes/pedelecs
• Space optimization through advanced cycle planning tools
• Data management for bicycle traffic
• ITS and cycling

Following the discussion, the questions from the audience were related to the lack of user-perspective taken by the different actors shaping the city including the actors coming from the technology sector. Other questions were related to the way space was allocated in cities especially the space allocated for car parking.

Some of the conclusions from the discussion were:
• Cycling and walking are low technology in their essence therefore offer many opportunities for quick wins
• The need of international and public-private cooperation
• The need of political leadership
• The need to get more data on non-motorised transport
• Active mobility is highly beneficial to health
• More emphasis should be put on the vulnerable road-users and calls for approached taking a user-perspective.
